Label

Communicate Climate Impact With Verified Carbon Labels

Klimato's carbon labels translate emission data into a clear A–E scale, measured in kg CO₂e per meal. Each label is color-coded and calibrated against climate science.

The scale is aligned with the Paris Agreement and the WRI Coolfood Pledge, so your communication is grounded in recognized standards. Labels can be applied to physical menus, digital displays, apps, and reporting dashboards.

Label Range Climate Context
A | Very Low < 0.4 kg CO₂e
In line with the Paris Agreement (below 2°C)
B | Low 0.4–0.9 kg CO₂e
Aligned with 2030 targets & WRI Coolfood
C | Medium
0.9–1.8 kg CO₂e ≈ 2.5°C scenario
D | High 1.8–2.6 kg CO₂e
≈ 3°C scenario
E | Very High ≥ 2.6 kg CO₂e
> 3°C scenario

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ About Klimato Carbon Labeling

What is a food carbon footprint, and how is it calculated?

A food carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions produced across the full life cycle of a dish—from agricultural production and processing to transport and preparation—expressed in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂e). Klimato calculates this using peer-reviewed emission factors aligned with ISO 14040 and 14044 and the GHG Protocol, applied at the ingredient level for each recipe.

How does carbon labeling for food work?

Carbon labeling assigns an emission score to each dish and displays it on menus using a standardized scale. Klimato uses an A–E rating system calibrated against Paris Agreement temperature pathways, expressed in kg CO₂e per meal based on a 100g portion reference. This allows fair comparison across dishes regardless of cuisine or concept.

What is the Klimato Carbon Labeling platform?

Klimato Carbon Labeling is a software platform for food service businesses. It enables teams to calculate the carbon footprint of any recipe using a database of 20,000+ ingredients, build menus with climate labels, engineer lower-emission dish options, manage multiple restaurant accounts, and generate sustainability reports. It covers recipe management, menu management, and food emissions reporting—but does not include scope 1–3 corporate emissions accounting, which is handled separately by Klimato Food Emissions and Klimato Carbon Accounting.

Is the carbon data compliant with CSRD and ESG reporting standards?

Klimato's emission data is aligned with the GHG Protocol and peer-reviewed to ISO standards. Food emissions data generated by Klimato can feed into CSRD-relevant reporting, including Scope 3 Category 1 (purchased goods and services). For full Scope 1–3 corporate reporting, Klimato offers additional products—Klimato Carbon Accounting and Klimato Food Emissions.

Which types of businesses use Klimato Carbon Labeling?

The platform is used by contract caterers, hotel food service operations, restaurant groups, and university and institutional food providers. It is designed for food businesses that manage large recipe and menu volumes and need reliable, auditable emission data.
