How It Works

Klimato Carbon Labels

The Klimato label shows two pieces of information:

  • Rating (A–E): based on the carbon intensity of the dish, scaled to a standard 400g full-size meal for fair comparison across meals.

  • Absolute emissions per serving or 100g: the actual carbon footprint of one serving or 100g of the dish.

Claim Scope
The labels rate the climate impact of a standard size meal of 400g from A (very low) to E (very high) based on the carbon footprint of the ingredients, from farm to their distribution, including packaging and food losses. The label could be accompanied by a carbon footprint number in kg CO2e per serving size or per 100g.

It does not cover water use, biodiversity, or other environmental factors.

About EmpCo

What EmpCo Requires

From 27 September 2026, Directive (EU) 2024/825, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, or EmpCo, prohibits vague, unsubstantiated environmental claims (‘sustainable’, ‘eco-friendly’) across all consumer-facing communication. The Directive also applies to carbon labels that are not based on a third-party certification scheme, or that are misleading, for example where the environmental dimension the label covers is not clearly disclosed to consumers.

About ESFC and The EmpCo Scheme

The Third party-scheme

The European Sustainable Food Coalition (ESFC) is a multi-stakeholder coalition working to accelerate credible, comparable, and accurate product-level impact assessments in the European food and beverage sector. ESFC developed, together with Klimato and other industry peers, an EmpCo-compliant certification scheme built specifically for food and beverage climate claims. 

The scheme works through a four-party model:

  • ESFC owns the scheme

  • The technology provider, like Klimato, owns the methodology

  • Traders are the companies using the labels

  • An independent Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) verifies the methodology against the scheme requirements and the claims

Labels Outside the EU

Klimato Carbon Labels Used in Markets Not Covered by EmpCo

Every Klimato label follows the same method and the same format, wherever it appears. The Directive reaches any business that sells or markets to EU consumers, which includes businesses based outside the EU. We ask all traders to join the scheme, not just the ones the Directive clearly covers. That's what makes the label worth something: every claim behind it has been through the same review.
