Product Carbon Footprint

Calculate the Carbon Footprint of Your Food Products And
Communicate It With Confidence

Buyers, retailers, and regulators are asking for climate data on the products you sell. Klimato gives food producers a clear, science-backed way to calculate, report, and label the carbon footprint of their products without building the methodology from scratch.

Buyers Want Data.

Regulations Are Coming.

Your Products Need a Number.

The pressure on food producers and wholesalers to demonstrate climate performance is increasing—from retail RFPs and foodservice tenders to incoming greenwashing rules and regulations.

But calculating a credible product carbon footprint takes time, access to the right data, and a methodology that holds up to scrutiny. Most companies either put it off or rely on estimates that don't stand behind their claims when questioned.

Klimato makes it straightforward. Upload your product data, and our science team does the heavy lifting, from emission factor mapping to final report and label—all aligned with recognized international standards.

0%

of European tenders already include environmental criteria. Verified product carbon data is becoming a baseline requirement for winning business.

What Is a Product Carbon Footprint?

A product carbon footprint (PCF) is a measure of the total greenhouse gas emissions generated across a product's life cycle—from raw material extraction and processing through to distribution. It is expressed in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kg CO₂e) per unit or per kilogram of product.

For food producers, PCF calculations provide ingredient-level emissions visibility that supports both commercial communication and compliance with frameworks like the EU Green Claims Directive, ISO 14067, and CSRD Scope 3 reporting.

Why Generic Carbon Footprint Tools Fall Short

Most carbon footprint platforms are built for corporate-level reporting, not the ingredient-level complexity of food products. Calculating an accurate PCF for food requires food-specific emission factors, sourcing data handling, and methodology aligned with how food supply chains actually work.

Generalist carbon accounting tools
  • → Generic emission factors not calibrated for food

  • → Limited ability to handle ingredient and sourcing variation

  • → Reports that don't meet ISO 14067 or Green Claims expectations

  • → No connection to the food industry supply chain or buyer networks

Klimato Product Carbon Footprinting
  • 20,000+ food-specific emission factors, verified by WRI and IVL

  • ✔ Handles ingredient-level complexity and sourcing variation

  • ✔ Reports aligned with ISO 14067, GHG Protocol, and EU Green Claims Directive

  • ✔ Products listed in the Klimato database, visible to foodservice buyers

What is a product carbon footprint?

A product carbon footprint (PCF) measures the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product across its life cycle—typically from raw material production through to distribution. It is expressed in kg CO₂e per unit or per kg of product. For food companies, a PCF gives you ingredient-level climate data that supports commercial communication, buyer requests, and regulatory compliance.

What methodology does Klimato use for product carbon footprinting?

Klimato's product carbon footprint methodology is aligned with ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard. It has been critically reviewed by Bureau Veritas, and our emission database—containing over 20,000 food-specific data points—is verified by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and the World Resources Institute.

What does the carbon footprint report include?

The report documents your product's total CO₂e emissions, the system boundaries applied, the data sources and emission factors used, and the calculation methodology. It is structured to meet the requirements of buyer audits, retail RFPs, and voluntary or regulatory disclosures.

Is Klimato's carbon label compliant with the EU Green Claims Directive?

Klimato's carbon label is built on a third-party reviewed methodology aligned with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14067, with clear system boundaries and full traceability to the underlying report. This is designed to meet the substantiation requirements of the EU Green Claims Directive and the UK Green Claims Code. We recommend consulting legal counsel for jurisdiction-specific compliance questions as the directive is finalized.

How does product carbon footprinting connect to Scope 3 reporting?

For companies working on full corporate carbon accounting, PCF data directly strengthens Scope 3 Category 1 (purchased goods and services) reporting. Klimato's PCF data can feed into your customers' Scope 3 calculations—and if you use Klimato Carbon Accounting yourself, your verified product data integrates seamlessly.
